"Tell the chef, the beer is on me."
I just heard an older (2012) O&A show where Ant and Jimmy were talking, Ant was mentioning that he was watching some documentaries about Scientology. Anthony mentions this event happening, where a BBC journalist is investigating Scientology.
And do you know what Scientology’s tactic was to try to discredit this journalist?
They accused him of racism and bigotry.
Yes, the exact tactic of liberals and the proponents of social justice.
And the Scientologists hounded him about it, harassing him, slandering him, pushing false stories about things he didn’t do, falsely accusing him of being a racist and so on, until the above happened. That’s the BBC guy losing his fucking mind.
He surrendered frame.
Here’s an ask we got earlier regarding the things we mentioned in podcast 15 about maintaining frame.
If Frame is all about dismissing your opponents, then why was Hitchens so good at it? He always dealt with his oposition’s arguments, sometimes very seriously, and I don’t think I ever saw him lose frame. I think it’s something more than dismissal - it’s having control of yourself come from inside yourself. The levers that get a reaction from you should be facing in, not out. You change your mind when someone convinces you to change it, not by reaching over and pulling a lever.
Frame isn’t about dismissing your opponents, it’s about keeping control. If your enemy slanders you to attempt to defame and discredit you, they lose the argument, but if you lose your shit in response, then you lose frame, and you lose credibility.
Because now just look at that guy screaming. Scientology can say, “Look at this crazy guy! He was trying to accuse us of bad stuff, but he’s yelling and looks like a nut! This nutty guy can’t possibly be right!”
It doesn’t matter if you’re right or wrong. It’s how you look when you’re saying it.
Hitchens never lost frame because he was classically trained in debating, and was also very hardened and experienced in heated debates. Maintaining frame is a debate tactic but it also applies to people who try to discredit you with libel or slander. It works from dealing with shit like Scientology or liberals (those two groups sharing a lot of similar ideology) to dealing with women who try to shame you into paying for their meals or kneeling to their whim. With women, if you maintain frame, it forces their hormones to charge and incite sexual arousal in their bodies against their will. In politics, it’s a matter of simply looking dignified and rational, which in the public eye is MORE important than being objectively correct.
In a way, our blog willingly surrenders frame on occasion, because we don’t give a fuck, we’re just here to fuck around, and people can take us or leave us, we don’t care if we lose every follower, and we shamelessly milk our readers for free money on patreon just to post shit about how much we continue to not like sinfest. We don’t give a fuck about frame on this blog. We’re not in this to win arguments or inform anyone.
But at the same time I mean look at how great our blog is. You read our blog, and on a casual Tuesday night we’ll just throw out thousand ton gold ingots like this without even much thinking about it. And only the most internet shitposting hardened niggas can put up with our blog to be rewarded with our genius. 8)
